Experience with Open source Interaction

It has been fun so far interacting with the apache and videolan development communities, it has enlightened me in so many ways. I have been able to understand some new programming concepts, solve persistent problems or bugs in my software and have a detailed knowledge of what an open source project is. I had good experiences with the two forums I joined and received varying responses, some positive, others negative but all the it is still for Academic Development isnt it??? so what the heck??? Its worth all the effort put in. I will still continue to interact regularly with the forum, in fact I posted a Thank you message for a member who assisted me with a bug
in my apache software. Although the bug I repoted to the videolan team has not been fixed, I am still expectin g more replies in coming weeks so I need check in on it regularly. Overall, the past few weeks have been both breathtaking and hilarious, I would say it has been fun and  I hope to continue enjoying myself. Cheers fellas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apache problem report

Just yesterday, while using apache server I encountered a problem, the Apache service refused to start. I reported to the apache friends and fortunately I've received a helpful reply to solve my problem. But I'll still provide more details for future improvement. The post I published is as follows:

I tried to start apache, and it gives an error saying the Apache ssl port 443 is blocked.
What give an error saying...?

Where do you see this error message about port 443?

Read the xammp\apache\logs\error.log file at about the date and time you last tried to start Apache for more details about your error.

If port 443 or any port that XAMPP requires is already in use then this will prevent Apache etc. from starting.

To see what is using the ports that XAMPP requires exclusively, use this nice little freeware no-install app. CurrPorts from here:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html

I now published more info about the error:

On the the Services interface, when i try to start the Apache2 service, the bar moves then stops and returns an error message saying Apache SSL port 443 is blocked. In the log file there is no record of this error.

More details, please. And what does Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) complain? And have you tried to reset VLC settings?

So far I have had 76 views and 4 replies and I hope to do better.
Although, the other open source forum I joined which is the very active Apache community. I posted a report
and haven't gotten any reply since. The post is about an error I am getting when configuring my Apache server
to send emails. The post is as follows:

Apache Problem reports
by mconi2007 » 26. April 2011 12:12

Hi, I have configured my php.ini file to send email but it keeps giving me this error:

sendmail: Error during delivery: Socket Error # 10051
Network is unreachable.
sendmail: Error during delivery: Socket Error # 10051
Network is unreachable.

I have done all the configurations right and it keeps telling me the email has been sent but in my apache error log keep saying the above and the destination email address does not receive the message.

After that i saw this problem report on my system which perhaps could be related to the above

Can't connect to MySQL server XAMPP 1.7.4 or 1.7.5
by Docwiz » 28. April 2011 02:49

Using 1.7.4 and also tried 1.7.5 beta 1 and neither will work when I try an outside program such as Navicat
when connecting to MySQL on the same computer.

If I use PHPmyAdmin on the same computer it works great. I can logon fine.
When I try Navicat (again on the same computer) it gives me an odd error that makes no sense.

Yes, I searched the forums, but everyone had simular questions with no answers.

2003 - Can't connect to MySQL server on localhost

1) My firewall has been disabled *confirmed*
2) Same login and program worked fine on 1.7.3 of XAMPP
3) I also tried to make a new account with full permissions and "any host" and still it refuses to connect.
4) MySQL is running *confirmed*
5) MySQL is NOT running as a service *confirmed*
6) Running on Windows XP professional
7) Default mysql port (3306)
8 ) Power Cycled computer
9) Restarted both Apache and MySQL (still does not work)
10) Installed using the installer program
11) Tried installing Xampp on two different XP computers (still does not work)
12) connected to both localhost and of course 127.0.0.1 and still does not work.
13) Same login and password combo works fine on phpMyAdmin but not on any outside program like Navicat.
14) Tried with a server name and localhost, makes no difference (both are locked out)

I really don't want to spend time to go back to 1.7.3 which worked, thanks.

Is there something on security that I don't know about that Oswalt changed on Xampp
to make it more secure, but completely useless outside of phpMyadmin?
or outside of locahost?

Amidst all other comments I replied as follows:

Re: Can't connect to MySQL server XAMPP 1.7.4 or 1.7.5

I also use Xampp 1.7.4 and it is working fine. I even installed zend framework on my machine and it all working fine!!!!!
Can anyone help with the configuration of xampp for sending non-local mails??????
